L’Hospitalet de Llobregat has joined the Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism program, with the aim of improving sustainable tourism management and strengthening its position as a tourism destination.
The Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism is a program promoted by the Tourism Services Management of the Barcelona Provincial Council, with the support of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, and is implemented across the territory through local tourism management bodies. The program follows a methodology based on continuous training in sustainability, individual work by participating entities, and collective meetings with other stakeholders in the destination.
It is an internationally recognized program that certifies the good practices of tourism companies and services that hold the certification, in line with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism provides participating organizations with guidelines, improvement plans, workshops, training, and personalized support to implement the actions and good practices required by the commitment.
In order to measure progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals within the European Union, a set of EU SDG indicators was developed in 2017 under the leadership of Eurostat.
These indicators are structured around the 17 goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and offer a statistical overview of sustainable development in the EU and its member states. The indicators focus on key aspects from the EU’s perspective and cover the social, economic, environmental, and institutional dimensions of sustainability represented in the 2030 Agenda. Each SDG is usually represented by five or six key indicators selected to reflect its main goals. Some of these indicators are multipurpose, meaning they are used to monitor more than one SDG, highlighting the interconnected nature of the objectives. The indicator set is reviewed annually to incorporate new data sources and account for new milestones, in line with the EU’s long-term vision and the priorities of the European Commission.
Within the framework of the Destination Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat has obtained the Biosphere® Sustainable Committed seal, recognizing the city as a tourism destination committed to sustainability through three fundamental pillars: culture, the environment, and the socioeconomic sphere.
Currently, L’Hospitalet holds this certification thanks to the actions carried out by the Transformative City Unit.
To ensure the effective achievement of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat’s objectives regarding tourism activity and its involvement in the Commitment to Sustainable Tourism – Barcelona Destination, the L’Hospitalet de Llobregat Sustainable Tourism Working Group is established.
This is a consultative and participatory body bringing together all relevant stakeholders, chaired by the Directorate of the Transformative City Area, as part of the joint strategy between the tourism sector and the city of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
The Sustainable Tourism Working Groups are held annually and serve as a space for proposals and monitoring of the good practices to be implemented, with the aim of integrating tourism sustainably into the city’s future development model.
This year’s session will take place on November 20, 2025.
