The second edition of Berdache, the festival of visual and performing arts focused on gender and identity, will be held from 19 to 28 June. Berdache presents eleven proposals for theatre, music, dance, visual arts, poetry, stage intervention and performance with the support of the L’H Cultural District.
The second edition of Berdache is committed to a programme with big names and emerging talents that brilliantly address gender issues, taking place at the Teatre Joventut, Auditori Barradas, the La Bòbila Planta Uno Cultural Centre and El Pumarejo.
The starting point will be on 19 June at the Teatre Joventut with the theatrical show Tránsitos by Mariana Percovich and David Teixidó, which delves into vital transits such as illness, love and old age through six characters from the so-called LGBTIQ+ community.
Planta Uno presents a performance by Miguel Andrés on 22 June, with a work focused on experimentation with performance and video art, exposing his corporality as the central axis of his research. His work stands out for its marked criticism with contemporary society.
The Auditori Barradas welcomes musical proposals by Simona on 25 June, who proposes a collage of life itself, a queer look beyond stereotypes. On 26 June, the poet Mireia Calafell and the cellist and composer Björt Rùnars present the hypnotic recital Varosha. A concert by Las Bajas Pasiones on Sunday 27, one of the phenomena of the queer scene in Barcelona, with songs that have become anthems of resistance from the LGTBIQ community.
The La Bòbila Cultural Centre offers several proposals. On 25 June, Flamenco Queer meets Vogue: gender binarism, so ingrained in society and associated with flamenco, is rejected by means of performance, music, aesthetics and scenography, to discuss themes from a queer perspective. On June 26, Personaje (Juan Diego Peña) and Ken Pollet (Elena Ramírez) present Error 404. Reality not found, a proposal of two sexual dissidents and activists whose starting point is the interruption between the server and the user. Sunday 27, Trans/Masculinitats/En/Escena brings together the eyes of Eloi Martí and Març Llinàs to share questions with the public inspired by the exercise of moving to masculine identities, about the limits, challenges and tensions of this journey.
On Monday, 28 June, Pride Day, Berdache proposes three highlights of the festival. At the Teatre Joventut, the writer Brigitte Vasallo and the visual artist Alba G. Corral present the stage show Un cos (possible) i lesbià.
At the Barradas Auditorium, Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol present the show #Losmicrófonos. With a title-hashtag and dialogues built with the names of famous pop stars, melodies from their songs and well-known film phrases, Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol humorously strip the appropriation of languages and messages that reach us through mainstream culture.
Finally, in El Pumarejo, the flamenco singer Ana Brenes presents the show Camino, a metaphysical walk through the artist’s imagination told through the styles of flamenco.
In addition to these proposals, Berdache continues to offer the virtual space where you can find the work of artists with discourses linked to gender and identity, the Berdache Viewing Room. It has also set up its first collaboration with the University of Barcelona to discover emerging talents.
