L’Hospitalet promotes sustainability among the city’s hotels

YESTERDAY, TEN HOTELS ATTENDED THE WORKSHOP ON HOW TO OBTAIN BIOSPHERE CERTIFICATION

Yesterday, representatives from ten of L’Hospitalet’s hotels attended a workshop on sustainable tourism, aimed at hotels that are interested in signing up to the Biosphere Sustainability Commitment.
The event took place at Gornal Activa and was led by Marc Pàvia, a consultant specialising in projects designed to develop quality tourism and local tourism. The official welcome address was given by José Antonio Alcaide, the Councillor for Tourism and Economic Promotion.

After two years of hard work, last June L’Hospitalet obtained Biosphere certification: a quality seal identifying the city as a tourist destination that is helping to develop a safer and more sustainable form of tourism and working towards a model of sustainability that will last over time. This certification will also enhance the city’s reputation as a tourist destination, help attract responsible tourism and serve as an additional pull-factor for visitors.

One of the commitments undertaken by recipients of the certification is to make the city’s companies aware of the benefits of respecting the environment and to promote membership of the Biosphere programme, with the aim of enabling the private and public sectors to work together to promote L’Hospitalet as a sustainable destination. Currently, three of the city’s hotels have obtained this certification: the Hyatt Regency Barcelona Tower Hotel, the Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel, and the Radha Hotel.

During the workshop, a presentation was given on the 17 sustainable development goals; the benefits of a sustainable management system were highlighted, in terms of attracting new customers and creating added value; and participants were given information on how hotels can contribute to the fight against climate change and help protect the environment. Another workshop will be held on 20 December, on this occasion aimed at the city’s companies.

Biosphere certification is awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) to certify good practices on the part of tourist services and companies. The initiative is promoted in Barcelona by the city’s Provincial Council and Chamber of Commerce.

The City Council promotes good tourism practices

This year, L’Hospitalet published a guide to good tourism practices for visitors and tourists, in order to promote responsible tourism that respects the environment. The guide covers local businesses, tourist accommodation, traditions, cuisine, heritage, mobility and the environment, and includes details on all of the city’s facilities and tourist attractions.
